Monday 31st August 2009...

It is an early start this morning because our fearless adventurers are going to attempt a 595 mile blast across the state of Kansas to Denver Colorado. We will be helped by the fact that the clocks go back an hour before we reach our destination, so up up and away. There is no getting away from it but Kansas is pretty flat and full of cattle farms, from end to end in fact, but it makes the driving easier. The cruise control is a great help, just set it to a few mph over the limit (70mph in Kansas) and sit back for a few hours. We had a couple of comfort breaks and lunch at an Applebys but we can't remember where, good grub though. We pass a place that boasts an 8,000lb ground hog and a six legged steer? We were warned back at Applebys that it was a con and pretty poor (the ground hog is apparently made out of paper). I think this was the only highlight in Kansas except maybe all the oil fields.
On to Colorado and drivers heaven, the speed limit is up to 75mph, which means we can fly along at 79 with all the other traffic YeeeeeeeHaaaaah. Only 60 miles to go now and there is a fearsome storm just ahead. Large amounts of lightning, it is as black as night, and I can't see the road as it has turned into a river. Ten minutes and we are out the other side. Wow what an experience. Arrive in Denver to hoards of South Americans everywhere? What is that all about? The nice ladies back at the border in the tourist office gave a pile of literature, so we found a Westin 4 crown hotel in the center and set the Sat Nav and hey presto here we are, and they have a very nice room for us for the night. A shower, a vodka and coke, a great meal in Palm's restaurant, and bed. Goodnight all, sleep well.
