Durango to Monument Valley

Monday 7th September 2009...

Up early and on the road by 09:15. We stopped off at a little town called Mancos for coffee and a banana. We are only travelling about 180 miles today so we stop off at Mesa Verde national park which is a 45 mile round trip. There are dozens of stop off places and view points which we take advantage of and merrily snap away a few hundred photos between us. By the time we get to the cliff side palace we are pretty tired and the heat is up to about high 80's. We are glad we did it because the views are stunning and all for $15 entrance fee, thank you Mesa Verde.

Next we are off to the Four Points Corner monument. The scenery along the way is awesome and certainly the most desolate place any of us ever been to. The heat at the monument is staggering (low-mid 90's) so we take the obligatory photos at the point where the four states meet (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, & Arizona). We buy some native jewellery and a T-shirt and it is off on the road again.

We drive the rest of the way to 'The View' hotel in Monument valley which as everyone knows is where John Wayne lived (ha ha). The room is on the top floor overlooking the valley so the views are spectacular. We take some photos then shower and off to the Navajo/American fusion style restaurant. I had a flat piece of beef deep fried in breadcrumbs and smothered in brown gravy and barbeque beans, it was fantastic. Took some shots of the sunset. No alcohol here (only Kaliber , remember that Mick ). And so to bed.
